Dealing with Grief

Part of the beauty of being human is our amazing range of emotions. Even so, grief is an experience most of us would avoid, if given half a chance. Grief is a normal response to loss but it is a difficult, painful and often confusing process that affects our whole person; physically, emotionally, behaviorally and spiritually. A grieving person may suffer from headaches, upset stomach, tightness in the chest or throat, or exhaustion. They may feel guilty, depressed, withdrawn, short-tempered, absent-minded, or angry with God. These are just a few of the complex symptoms of grief and they can come and go, sometimes without warning. There is no timetable for grief. Everyone grieves in their own way and in their own time, and no two people experience grief in the same way. It is important to remember that grief is a process, and not an event.

Because grief is so painful, many people attempt to run from it and avoid the pain. However, this can intensify the anxiety, confusion and depression and it can also prolong the grieving process. One must experience the pain in order to heal, but you don’t have to do it alone.

Recognizing that grief is a difficult process, Hospice of Holland provides support to walk with you through this journey. Hospice offers a variety of grief support services at no charge. These services can help you learn how to deal with issues related to terminal illness, death, dying and grief.

Bereavement services include:

Individual Support - A Bereavement Counselor is able to meet with individuals to offer support and grief counseling on an as needed basis. Meetings can take place in an individual’s home or in the Hospice of Holland office.

Groups and Classes - Hospice of Holland offers a variety of support groups and classes for adults, teens and children. Groups and classes are often an excellent way to find support and meet others who are walking a similar grief journey.

Bereavement Volunteer - Hospice of Holland offers bereavement volunteers to help during this difficult time. A trained volunteer is matched carefully to an individual’s needs and is available to offer emotional support and to provide companionship.

Memorial Service - Each year, Hospice of Holland holds a memorial service. This is a program for all Hospice families who have lost a loved one during the past year. Hospice staff and volunteers, as well as community members help to make this a meaningful time of remembrance and celebration.

Hope through Healing Newsletter - Every few months, individuals receive a newsletter from our Bereavement Department. It contains articles on particular aspects of grief and loss as well as other information that can be helpful.

Hospice Library - Hospice of Holland has a library of books, cassettes and videos related to the many dynamics of dying and the bereavement process. The public is welcome to check out books and cassettes during business hours. Videos may be viewed at the Hospice of Holland offices.
